XII Moscow International Exhibition Art of the Dolls
A great gift for Moscow and visitors to the city - this year's large-scale exhibition of collectible dolls "THE ART OF THE PUPPET" will be held in December and will open the programme of the winter exhibition season: traditionally on the eve of the New Year and Christmas holidays.
For the first time, doll artists and their collections will occupy the entire space of Gostiny Dvor - 14,000 square metres of exhibition space and the beautiful Atrium, where the Pandora Platinum Awards ceremony for the best artists of the year will take place.
The 12th Gostiny Dvor exhibition of art collection dolls and teddy bears is a large-scale event, bringing hundreds of artists from Russia and 12 countries around the world with their best and newest creations.
A special section is dedicated to dolls from private collections and museum collections. Several puppet museums and private galleries are preparing unique projects and showcasing the rarest pieces from their vaults. Viewers will see dolls from four generations!
"THE ART OF THE PUPPET" is the event where the loudest discoveries, the most sensational sales and the most important meetings of the year happen.
Traditionally, the organisers divide the exhibition space into an art project, an art fair and a territory for good: a charity event.
Among this year's thematic projects:
- Marotte's Ball to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Museum of Unique Dolls the anniversary of the first museum of collectible dolls in Moscow, which its curators, together with the artists, will celebrate at the exhibition. The Marotte is an intrigue doll, an enigmatic musical puppet that has gone from the attribute of jesters to a fashion accessory of social beauties at balls. The museum will show a collection of ancient marottes and replicas by contemporary artists.
- A Suok doll from the Soviet film The Three Fat Men, The favourite of millions of viewers and a film legend of the last century will appear in a sumptuous pink dress at this Ball of the Museum of Unique Dolls. The one, After 55 years after the shooting of the film, carefully preserved by museum owner Yulia Vishnevskaya.
- Project a la russe: Russian cultural code and the history of traditional craftsmanship through puppet images and outfits. The masters combined the most expensive embroidery, gold embroidery, with folk crafts: Gzhel, Khokhloma and Gorodets. 13 gold embroiderers prepared 200 unique Christmas decorations for the exhibition. Bright colours of silk and gold thread, native patterns, touching toys - a kaleidoscope of Russian characters and traditions.
- Project "Christmas Stories. Paris" - a real French house that appeared in the artists' workshops, overcoming the closed borders between countries. In this house there are miniature rooms, halls, a café on the ground floor, a book salon, a gastronomy, a haberdashery. Would you like to go to Paris again? Please! Bienvenue!
- "Porcelain-rophrenia. Ghosts of the Old Garden": an incredibly technically challenging project involving 27 authors who have created 40 mysterious characters in snow-white English porcelain - our new version of Alice in Wonderland.
- One Track a striking project whose title is not a random set of words, but an associative term of two artists' names: Vincent Willem van Gogh and Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monthe. "One Track" is a project that we dedicated to the friendship of these artists. One track, one path, one melody... Romantic, a bit daring, a bit grotesque, tender and necessarily about love. A fantastic palette of colours by one and a brilliant graphic painting by the other.
– "Porcelain masterpieces". A project of the legendary Vakhtanov's Puppet Gallery by Irina Myzina, who stood at the origins of puppetry in Russia. This time the gallery will present a collection of luxury and rare porcelain dolls, the most valuable and unique works collected over the last 25 years.
- PetrushkaFest a ringing, colourful fair with circus elements and puppet theatre performances; folk puppets and toys, a competition "The People's Puppet 2021. This year's premieres: Neapolitan puppet theatreThe artist Ulyana Korpan has recreated it according to the canons of past centuries with the traditional characters of Commedia dell'arte: Colombine, Harlequino, Pantalone and Brigella. А Round the corner puppet theatre In addition to the beloved Petrushka, the audience will be treated to excerpts from new performances of the life-size puppets.
– The project "Tania and Vitya, tea drinkers", The author is artist, designer, stylist and performance artist Julia Che. Tea compositions created in the technique of recycling, which is new for dolls, but topical in contemporary art. Julia has chosen unnecessary plastic objects as a material for artistic, fashion and social purposes. Rubbish, unnecessary and broken things are a great material for creating a new art object, art space, art action. Julia surprisingly launches an endless stream of creativity from abandoned things. "Issues of environmental themes, recycling and waste management, and sensible consumption can be tackled in a stylish and witty way," says the artist.
- Academy Gallery project - a collection of masks that artist Catherine Tarasova has dedicated to the palaces of the Grand Canal in Venice. Each of them has its own face and is worthy of being both a model and a storyteller. Each mask is a façade, behind which are the secrets and stories of centuries-old Venetian buildings.
- Ekaterina Shardakova's Freak Show project will continue this year's favourite audience and artist theme of the vintage circus from an unexpected perspective. Circus of Freaks is the theme of the artist's exploration of the public's vile interest in the imperfections of the human body, which generated fabulous profits for the owners. There will also be a 3-day exhibition here Monsieur Destiny's fortune teller box - find out your future for just 10 centimes!
- A supernatural history museum project from Estonia will be represented by a series of works by Jüri Mildeberg. Mildeberg creates his mythical world in art not only in graphics, but also in objects made of various codpieces, wood and metal. His gallery of characters is akin to images from the voyage of St. Brendan, where so many seemingly ordinary men and women intertwine with a different nature, born out of an unbridled mythological perception and fantasy of birds, fish, animals and other creatures.
25 art zone projects The exhibitions continue with a huge area of creativity - an art fair of dolls and teddy bears from all over the world.
The scale and range of exhibits on display is impressive - all kinds and trends of modern and vintage dolls, designer toys and teddy bears.
On view are porcelain splendid beauties - the absolute classics - and ironic character characters as frozen moments of our lives in dolls; interior, theatrical and animated dolls, homemade, marotte dolls, dolls in pictures and photographs by contemporary artists.
Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to buy works by artists of various levels and price range, educational literature, materials for making dolls and bears, accessories, gifts for spring family celebrations, and photographs with unique dolls, which will go into private collections after the exhibition and will forever disappear from public view.
