DDNEWS' pick for April: "Dutchman, the age of Peter"
Today we present a fine craftsman who creates striking images from wood.
Ruslan Nikulin has been carving wood for over 25 years. In the last few years he has taken an interest in making dolls. His characters are inhabitants of other worlds, which he accidentally saw and captured. That is why it is difficult for the artist to give a name to his works.
The author is about his characters:
"I created my first doll in 2008. My favourite theme is fairytale fiction. In wood I create characters with a story, I can fulfil my many fantasies. A doll is a parallel world for me."
"I'm interested in dolls that are mysterious, that display different emotions. I love non-standard images. Thanks to them, the viewer starts to think and invent their own life stories".
"I create images that are born inside me. It's as if I've been to a fairytale world and now I'm realising what I've seen. Sometimes I don't make a sketch and work in the material straight away.
Ruslan Nikulin's work has won numerous awards, is part of private collections all over the world and occupies a well-deserved place in the world of art dolls.
