Geoffrey Gorman is a practicing artist who creates his original sculptures from found material in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He shows his work throughout the United States and has also exhibited in China, South Korea, and Canada. Over the years, his unique sculptures have been written about in the New York Post, Southwest Art, American Craft, American Style, and Cloth, Paper, Scissors.
Geoffrey Gorman's love of animal subjects and the use of found materials stems largely from his upbringing. As a young boy, he self-described himself as "Huck Finn." He spent his childhood exploring the barns and woods around the old horse farm on which he lived outside of Baltimore, Maryland. The menagerie of domestic and wild animals he kept as a child explains his fascination with animals.
The materials Geoffrey Gorman uses are also drawn from his childhood experiences and environment. "It's a real throwback to my childhood, and I think the patina I get from the material I use feels rusty, worn and weathered. And that idea of the passage of time, I think, comes from growing up on our old farm, in huge barns and that kind of stuff that we had lying around everywhere. And that's the surface I love the most."
Geoffrey Gorman's fascination with the found materials he uses stems from more than just childhood associations. Geoffrey Gorman expresses his desire to push the traditional notion of what constitutes beauty and art: "The first thing I made turned out to be made out of rags, wire, wax and really fancy materials because I was just sick of the art world using really fancy materials. I believed that things could be made out of almost anything." Geoffrey Gorman's powerful imagination transforms these seemingly useless little things from rubbish meant to be displayed in a gallery.
