This masterclass will allow you to make an elegant brooch-talisman Thistle.
The thistle, known for its prickly appearance, embodies defiance, asceticism and toughness. In Christianity, its thorns represent the suffering of Christ, and the plant with its white-spotted leaves is associated with the milk of the Virgin Mary. In many cultures around the world, thistle is considered a powerful amulet to ward off evil spirits.
On Christmas Eve, our ancestors placed thistle under the pillow for seven days and nights. Then, on the eighth and last night of Christmas Eve, the thistle was brought to the "transition woman" - an old woman healer. She conducted a special ritual in which she boiled thistle with wax and incense. The boiled wax was sewn into a ladanka, which was worn for protection from evil forces.
