Original Kate Church dolls
Kate Church graduated from the American Institute of Puppet Artists with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Kate describes her work as sculptural-puppetry, and this is particularly evident in the series of pieces she created for Cirque du Soleil, which have been sold around the world.
The subtle and delicate work with textiles deserves special attention. How easily and effortlessly the author plays with paper and cotton thread, feather and clay, returns to crumpled folds and fringes, imitating the "work" of fabric in another, similar material (papier-mâché, clay, plastic).
"Combining the line and form of sculpture with the playful anima of puppetry has been my livelihood for over 20 years. I began working with puppets when I was a partner in the Nova Scotia Mermaid Theatre. The desire to do more than dress marionettes and puppeteers was the reason I created my first small puppet... That puppet still sits in my studio today, charming all who see it.
My work is based on constant practice and study of the human figure... I intend to convey a silent imprint or emotion through body posture and expression..." (c) Kate Church
