Art deco bas-reliefs and sculptures by Victoria Ellis
Victoria Ellis' signature response to the popular decorative style of the early 20th century presents us with bas-reliefs and sculptures made with great reverence for the original objects. The artist uses a special technique of 'carving' into the clay, similar to the way in which openwork cut-outs are made from paper.
Art Deco, sometimes called Deco, is a style of fine art, architecture and design that first emerged in France shortly before the First World War. It influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewellery, fashion, cars, cinemas, trains, ocean liners and everyday objects such as radios and hoovers. Art Deco got its name, short for Arts Décoratifs, from the exhibition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes.
