Roger Capron: the ceramic master who revitalised Valloris

Roger Capron, a prominent French ceramicist, was born on 4 September 1922 in Vincennes, France. His life and work have left an indelible mark on the world of ceramics.
Roger Capron studied applied arts in Paris from 1939 to 1943. During this time he immersed himself in the world of art, mastering different techniques and styles. After graduation, in 1945, he began his career as an art teacher. However, his true calling soon led him down a different path.
In 1946 Roger Capron moved to Vallauris, a small town in the south of France, which soon became the centre of his artistic activity. Here he founded his first ceramic workshop under the name "l'Atelier Callis". This move was the beginning of a revival of ceramic art in Vallauris, which had previously been known for its tradition in pottery.
In 1952 Roger Capron bought a derelict pottery workshop in Vallauris and turned it into a small ceramic factory employing 15 workers. His unique style and innovative approaches to ceramics quickly attracted attention and recognition. By 1957 Roger Capron already had a considerable international reputation. His work was characterised by vibrancy, originality and high quality, making him one of the leading ceramicists of his time.
By 1980, Roger Capron had 120 people working in his factory. During this period, he returned to the production of disposable items, which were exhibited internationally and attracted the attention of collectors and art connoisseurs from all over the world. His work became a symbol of French ceramics and received many awards and recognitions.
However, the economic crisis of the 1980s did not spare the Roger Capron factory. In 1982, the company was forced to close. Despite this, Roger Capron continued to create and left behind a substantial body of work that continues to inspire and delight. He passed away on 8 November 2006, leaving behind a rich legacy that is recognised around the world.
Roger Capron has made an invaluable contribution to the revival and development of ceramic art. His work is characterised not only by a high level of craftsmanship but also by a profound artistic expression. Roger Capron has skilfully combined traditional techniques with contemporary approaches to create unique works that continue to inspire new generations of artists and ceramicists.
The life and work of Roger Capron is a story of passion, talent and the relentless pursuit of perfection. His contribution to the world of ceramics cannot be overestimated and his work lives on in museums and private collections around the world.
